Quote:Dear P2,
For all the day-to-day rush of politics, it’s important to pause and focus on the bigger things.
This past week, I was reminded of that in two very different ways.
On 18 August, Vietnam Veterans’ Day, I had the honour of paying tribute to the men and women who served in that conflict.
They answered the call no matter who was Prime Minister – through tough times and good times. And we should acknowledge and commend them.
It was a controversial war, but they still stepped up and did their duty.
For Australia, Vietnam was predominantly a ground war.
For our soldiers, their experiences were especially gruelling. Amidst constant patrols through jungles, mountains, swamps, rice paddies, rubber plantations and villages, there was the persistent risk of ambush, the peril of booby traps, and the intensity of close-quarter fighting and guerrilla warfare.
More than 3000 Australians were wounded in Vietnam, and 523 Australians fell in that foreign land.
And then, many experienced the pain of indifference and ingratitude upon their return home – and even abuse, as protests against the conflict grew heated.
By acknowledging that our veterans were not treated in a manner befitting their service and sacrifice, we recommit ourselves, as citizens, to not repeat the mistakes of the past – to always draw a distinction between the politics of war and the people who go to war.
Later in the week, in my capacity as a Shadow Minister in the Defence portfolio, I was privileged to celebrate the next generation of service men and women at the graduation ceremony for the Officers of the 148th class at the Royal Military Academy in Duntroon, Canberra.
These courageous young men and women are taking up the legacy of our Vietnam veterans – and indeed all the Anzacs of the past – in defence of our country and our values.
As Officers, they will be the leaders of our troops.
They carry a burden of decision making and are responsible for the lives of those under their command.
It’s a leadership role that requires wisdom, composure and sacrifice, and I have full confidence they’ll take up the responsibility with success.
It’s easy to be swamped by the daily noise of the 24/7 media cycle and social media.
But days of commemoration – like Vietnam Veterans’ Day – and days of celebration – like an RMC Officer graduation ceremony – remind us of the duty that defines the long story of our nation.
Our service men and women – past and present – have been willing to put their lives on the line for our freedom.
That is the bigger thing. And I’m proud to honour and celebrate them.
Yours for REAL solutions,
Jacinta Nampijinpa Price
Senator for the Northern Territory
Shadow Minister for Defence Industry
Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel
