Dear P2,

As long as we believe we’re victims, we’re never going to move forward.

I said that during the Voice debate and many more times since.

And it’s relevant once again with the latest stunt from Senator Lidia Thorpe.

I’m grateful for Lidia’s stance on the Voice. Even though she came to her No differently to the way I did, she stood firm.

But the ridiculousness and impotence of her broader brand of activism was on display for all to see with the visit of King Charles.

You don’t have to be a monarchist to understand how disrespectful and undignifying her display was.

And she indulged in the very same divisive language about land back that was one of the main reasons I wanted to defeat the Voice.

Worse, as a Senator, she swore an oath of allegiance to Australia and the Crown.

Again, you might not agree with the role of the monarchy, but that’s the law of the land here, and that oath is a requirement of being a Senator.

Lidia is not obliged to be a Senator if she cannot uphold her oath.

I take my oath seriously, and no childish weasel words about how she didn’t mean it can make up for the fact that it’s a serious thing to break an oath.

What struck me, though, is that if you asked Lidia, I’m sure she’d say her activism is all about power. You often see her raising her fist and talking about the power of her race and people.

But the truth is, she is forever the victim.

Her perspective is not of power, but someone eternally oppressed, and condemned to continually make ineffectual noise at the institutions and people who gave her her success.

Continuing to obsess over colonisation – a fact of life that happened generations ago – is to be always a victim and never powerful.

It’s to be always making noise and never achieving anything.

It’s about activist posturing and never REAL solutions.

That’s why I reject Lidia’s approach. It’s why I rejected the Voice.

I’ve said over and over again the way forward for Indigenous Australians is to move past narratives of victimisation and colonisation.

And stunts like Lidia’s just take us backwards.
