"He absolutely MUST remain in the dark, west of the terminator, until the last moments."
Two points:
1. Have you ever done a graphic showing where the day/night line (terminator) would cross the 7th arc at the time of fuel exhaustion, and overlaid the areas that have been searched so far?
2. Whether there was a night or daytime entry to the water might distinguish between an intentional (piloted, flown, relatively soft) ditching which would need daylight to have any purpose, and a spiral dive/crash caused by fuel exhaustion under autopilot - in which case darkness and/or a low altitude would be helpful to ensure the final moments are not seen by ships, and it would be planned to happen well to the dark side of the terminator to be safe.
