Just having a look at the media offerings on the storm damage at Brisbane airport. There is one picture of (I think) an Air Nauru 73 which has been damaged by the portable stairs; there are reports of other large-ish items being blown about the place. Is this perhaps where OH&S need a rethink. I have no quarrel with getting the ‘troops’ off the apron when a storm approaches, I really don’t, but with radar and the rest of it, adequate warning can be given that the ‘storm’ will arrive within the next 30 minutes or so. Surely, that amount of warning time could be used to get both crew and ‘ancillary’ equipment off the ramp and out of harms way, at least far enough away from parked aircraft and other potential targets. I just wonder how the insurance companies would view this, if push came to shove? The storm is an ‘act of the gods’, but leaving portable, unsecured equipment behind and watching it beat an aircraft to death could, possibly, be construed as ‘negligent’.
Dunno – just my two bob’s worth.
