The deeply fundamental 'changes' desperately needed by the aviation industry are, due - IMO pretty much on a par with Twain's opinion, except in one critical area; those which 'feed' and manage the politicians could do with some serious 'changes' to related information presented. Should the politician be made aware of the steep decline of an industry then, perhaps, those in opposition could (& should the mood move 'em) start banging the large public safety drum. For banging it does, indeed, need.

Many complicated 'examples' of why those in politics should pay attention to the current state of the overall aviation industry spring to mind; equally as many reasons emerge as why not to. Exodus 5 Bricks and Straw being the simplest example, just as without straw the bricks could not be made; so it is with the aviation 'industry'. This latest 'horror' completely preventable example – HERE – should certainly never have happened; nor is it an isolated case. It most certainly would not have occurred back in the days when I learned to fly. I hasten to add that had it occurred, with such a 'back story' or 'paper trail' then heads would have rolled. This, I believe, is the heart of the tale. Lazy Government at the core; top civil dogs and legal eagles cunningly sold a 'protection racket', (bridge like) to ministers; who, being woefully ignorant and disinterested of those matters to begin with, completely ignorant and a little scared of 'matters aeronautical', grasped the lifelines offered, with both hands. Why wouldn't you?

Here, the reader must take a breath and look to 'core' matters. In primus, the radical is the child could not properly 'fly' for nuts. Basic logic demands why not? Steep turns at low level, low speed and energy demand specialised training and 'clever' molding of 'attitude': in short serious training. The child at the controls had a penchant for low flight and an apparent complete lack of understanding the aerodynamics, physics or limitations of this type of operation. However, 'ticks' in the right boxes allowed progress to independent operation and the results of this lack of 'discipline' are now spread across a paddock, claiming two innocent lives. Does the CASA give a legal monkey's curse? No, Is the RAAOZ outfit in the gun -? No. What about those who, despite failed examinations, tutelage and the their 'advice' being dismissed by this child? Do they have any form of question to answer apart from their own conscience? The short answer is No. Three dead and no one, bar the child pilot carries any responsibility for allowing this to happen. Bollocks. In Spades - redoubled.

Ayup; It's all wrong. I think back to times where 'someone' was responsible to the CASA, his own professionalism and (impotently) to my young life. Instructors who would do a little more than tick-a-box. From Tiger Moth, to Ryan to P51. That last alone logged 50 odd hours, sat on the wing and some 20 odd hours at the blackboard ensuring that the 'limitations' (real ones) were understood. With few exceptions, back then, 'instructors' understood how to manage a young horse to prevent accident or injury to beast or rider. The notion of ''tick and flick' was alien to them.
“if you’re going to do spend your time doing something, do it well and do it right. The biggest mistake you can make (particularly early on) in your life is attempting to, “just get by.”
Whether I make a simple thing like a chair for a child, or sign out a new Captain, I accept the responsibility: all of it. For the collapse of either matters. Government agencies seem, to me at least, spend more time ducking, weaving and abrogating any and all responsibility; CASA the prime offender. The accident referred to is sheeted home to RA Oz, who lay it on the flight school, who lay it on the instructor, who lays blame of the pilot. More than any other 'event' - from an ATPL pilot on RPT who failed to recognise an Adiabatic event during a 'commercial' operation in familiar terrain, to a child who failed to recognise an impending 'stall' situation: - the 'system' of abrogated responsibility is, and will continue to claim lives. The 'Buck' as they say has to stop somewhere, usually at the top – the Ministers desk – perhaps?
Where does the 'Buck stop'? Bloody good question that one.
