Hubris, monoliths and Bullshit
"Straits'. Prophetic - ain't it"? Difficult blurb title to arrange that one. Chicken and egg sort of argument; which came first? The monolith or the hubris? The bull-shit is sort of wart like, it grew, much like Topsy alongside the total lack of Ministerial, or any other form of 'governance', audit, out side influence or even the world's acknowledged best practice from ICAO. Remarkable achievement - when you think about it.
If you can read between the lines of Hitch's article in Australian Flying, carefully. then consider not only the 'results' of the CASA "Stakeholder Survey' but the 'real' implications. For there you can see a very expensive, growing bureaucracy, wallowing in irrelevance to many,. bar the 'political'. A total; lack of any governmental responsibility or control. CASA feeds the bullshit to their paymasters and every thing is rosy in the Canberra bubble. Yet despite all the cozy, fluffy, warm feel good reports back to the Minister; the 'Croc Jock' debacle, costing millions, raises no political eyebrow. This is tax payer money being splurged to defend the indefensible. Reminds me of the now old song - "Money for Nothing and the Perks are free", coincidentally, played by 'Dire Straits'.

Aye well, for my sins, I have wandered the lovely world we exist in, plying my humble trade. From El Borma to Nepal; from Cape Town to Helsinki, Hong Kong to London town, etc. The only place where everything takes 'for ever and a day'' to be resolved, legal, neat tidy and operationally acceptable - Australia. And CASA wonder why no one gives a stuff about 'their' survey into industry 'satisfaction'. Take a long (long) hard look at the gross disparity between even a couple of 'simple' events. Log the differences between the Helicopter operations in the NTR, in court at great expense; and the crucifixion of a pilot doing 'joy flights' onto a beach - with a genuine engine failure. Don't make sense; non of it does. Yet there sits the 'responsible' authority; shameless, unimpeachable, the lowliest clerk earning more than any GA pilot; all under the munificent top cover of a purblind minister with an iron clad alibi. Shameful and bloody expensive.. Who pays? Oh, you do know the answer; BUT how about a remedy; what of that? After the expensive, fatal, marginal doings contained within the entire Croc Egg debacle (and Broome side bars), who you gonna call?

Well, that's enough ramble; too much probably. But, and only IMO this once great nation is headed down a rabbit hole. IF a simple matter, like running a small (by world standards) aviation industry, properly, fairly and reasonably, cannot be managed - then what hope for the really big guns, the ones that matter? Got no idea, but things just ain't the way they used to be; not by a long shot.
Item last - I hate (truly) making chairs: 20 joints, all exact, small pieces of lumber, all 'four square' (or trouble) etc. But, when I get a delightful, hand made card, with the word 'please' underscored, then, as they say; "needs must when the Devil drives." That's the trouble with kids - they grow. Ah well, I shall see whats in the racks and get it done, before a new order for a bigger one presents. Now, - boots, dogs and a lovely evening, the gate and the orchard beckons. Can't wait...
