Of all the 'media' coverage related to the trial of Wright, the ABC are at least providing information which is not just a 'sensational' headline grab. Whilst commendable they, like the 'other' media outlets are allowing the real story to not only be lost but are aiding and abetting history to be brushed away. That 'history' is the pathway to clarity and ultimately tragedy; one man dead, another in a wheel chair. This is the outcome of a aircraft crash which could/should have been prevented. 'Accidents' do happen, engines can fail, parts break, often a combination of many disparate elements are involved. The air like the sea is essentially elemental and while not overtly hostile, remains it's own master. Much like the laws of aerodynamics and machinery. Humankind through hard won bitter experience, have developed ways and means to mitigate the risks; developed law, safeguards, procedures, and instituted agencies to promote and, when required, enforce that law.

While the Barristers battle the Wright case out in court, like chickens in the back yard squabbling over corn kernels; the real story slinks away into the shadows, never to be heard. The great fiscal cost of the trial pales into insignificance when compared to the cost of the 'over-sight' levied on aviation, which the tax payer and industry fund. This is a serious, significant amount of money. Yet despite this, there is a clearly defined 'history' related to the case being heard in Darwin. Most of fully and freely available through the media and, contained within 'audit' and surveillance through the CASA 'oversight'. Not relevant to the 'matter in hand' - . BUT.

There are numerous cases where, despite a clean track record, CASA have stepped in and relentlessly prosecuted and closed down the operation. The 'history' of the Helibrook operation begs but one question. Why was it allowed to continue up to a fatal event? The writing 'on the wall' was clear and writ in crimson. Sooner or later it had to happen. The Daisy chain of events stretching back years should have had the alarum ringing as far South as Canberra. Instead of a serious deep look into the operation; the CASA Board turned up for a visit, had lunch and a joy flight. Gold star for Helibrook; self congratulations and high fives for the CASA board; and life returned to normal for the Croc egg crowd.
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind.
IMO; the history, connections and the manner in which the operation was managed demanded direct action from the Authority. The 'history' and track record is freely available through the printed media; which clearly indicated an operation disregarding the tenets within not only the CASA 'approved' (even to a Safety Management System) and operating practice, but the regulations. Of course this is all beyond the remit of the current court case; but was all well within CASA knowledge and their authority to put a full stop to the potential for tragedy. Why not? That stands as a very valid, pertinent question.
"Another and final question which IMO matters, is Why CASA asked to be 'dropped' or excluded from the Wright case? "
"The cross-claim was filed by CASA after Federal Court judge Elizabeth Raper rejected the regulator’s application to be dropped from the case."
