Quote:Proposed Bankstown Airport Southeast VFR Corridor
Written by Natalie Gane on 28 October 2024 - Submissions
The RAAA has provided feedback to CASA and Airservices Australia on the proposed Bankstown Airport Southeast VFR Corridor as we represent several member organisations based at Bankstown airport including Basair Aviation College (Flight Training), AirMed and Air Link (Jet charter and aeromedical services), Pionair (charter and cargo), AMSL Aero (aerospace development) and Aeria Management Group (AMG) who own and operate both Bankstown and Camden airports.
The constrained nature of the Bankstown control zone has been well recognised over many years. There continues to be sustained growth in air traffic in the Sydney region as well as congestion in the airspace to the north and west of Bankstown Airport where the current VFR exit and entry routes are located.
The RAAA acknowledges that CASA and Airservices Australia have been working on a practical and safe solution however we have concerns regarding the proposed altitude (surface to 1500ft AMSL) and the narrowing of the corridor near waypoints SPTM and CASO.
Careful consideration also needs to be given to the mixed levels of flying experience and aircraft sizes/speeds, the inadvertent breaching of Class C airspace, passing weather constraints, potential for increased ground congestion, longer transit times / costs to and from training areas, increased aircraft noise and impacts on IFR operations.

Quote:Submission to Senate RRAT Committee into Sydney Airport Management Demand Amendment Bill
Written by Natalie Gane on 4 November 2024 - Submissions
The RAAA broadly supports the government’s proposed legislation recognising that the bill intends to increase efficiency of aircraft movements within the current movement caps. The bill also seeks to address any potential anti-competitive behaviour by producing a stricter compliance regime around the slot allocation to reduce the potential for slot-hoarding and slot-misuse.
On closer examination the proposed reforms to increase Sydney Airport’s operational resilience by introducing a strictly controlled recovery period will help reduce delays when there is severe weather or other major disruptions. In a recovery period up to 85 aircraft movements per hour will be allowed
Whilst the proposal is that the Airservices Australia will be able to temporarily permit an extra five movements per hour for a maximum of two hours following the disruption, the RAAA strongly urges the government to increase the proposed five movements up to the airports operating capacity which is closer to 100 aircraft movements per hour, and for long as is required even if it is greater than the proposed two hours. It would be far more useful to the travelling public and the airlines if the additional capacity could be allowed until any substantial delays are fully recovered.
